How Live Edge Boards are created
A live edge charcuterie board is a beautiful and practical addition to any home kitchen. It's a long process to get these to your kitchen!
Lumber is collected at sawmills, some is purchased, some is dropped of by local tree companies and some sawmills actually go harvest their own trees!
Once at the mill, the rough logs are sawn into slabs and stacked to dry for 1 to 4 years. Some are even longer. After logs are sun dried, they are placed in vacuum kilns for further drying.
Once dried they are trimmed and sold to craftsman like me!
I take the raw wood and trim as needed, flatten them and plane them, some in a planer and some by hand! This process can take days to get a small slab perfectly flat.
The piece is then sanded by hand from 80 grit to 240 grit in 40 grit increments.
If there are voids and imperfections, they are filled with epoxy to seal the wood, many colors can be used and the epoxy process takes about 5 days to mix, pour, dry and sand.
Finish sanding starts and any new imperfections are filled and address, sanding again from 80 to 240 grit by hand. The piece is misted with water twice to raise the gran and re-sanded to ensure smooth finish.
Handles are cut or routed as needed and sanded clean.
Then comes the finish! The fun part, mineral oil is used to seal all exposed wood and once several coats are dried, they are waxed with natural bee’s wax.
Most 24” long boards take 6-8 hours from start to finish.
